LGBTQ+ Rights in Georgia: Why Are We Still Fighting for This?!

Writer: Heather WhiteHeather White

It’s 2025, and instead of working on actual issues like fixing healthcare, investing in schools, or making housing more affordable, Georgia lawmakers are… attacking LGBTQ+ rights. Again.

They’re pushing bills that would ban trans kids from sports, take away healthcare, and make it easier to discriminate. And for what? To score political points with extremists?

Because here’s the truth: Most people don’t want this. But the loudest voices in the room are making life harder for LGBTQ+ Georgians anyway.

What’s Going Down?

  • SB 1 & HB 104: Trans Sports Ban – This would ban transgender kids from playing on teams that match their gender identity. It’s a solution to a problem that doesn’t even exist.

  • SB 30: Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Minors – Would block doctors from providing life-saving healthcare to trans youth. Meanwhile, kids can get cosmetic procedures and braces, but not gender-affirming care? Make it make sense.

  • SB 36: “Religious Freedom” Discrimination Bill – Could let businesses refuse service to LGBTQ+ people under the guise of “religious beliefs.” We’ve seen this before, and it’s just legalized discrimination.

  • SB 39: Removing Insurance Coverage for Trans Healthcare – This would take gender-affirming care off the table for state employees, including teachers. Who’s next? Cancer patients? People who need birth control?

Why This Hurts Everyone

These bills don’t just hurt LGBTQ+ people. They hurt all of us:

Girls’ & Women’s Sports – Trans sports bans could lead to invasive gender testing for female athletes. Imagine being forced to “prove” you’re a woman just to play high school soccer.

Dangerous Precedents – If lawmakers can take away healthcare from one group, who’s next?

Business & Tourism Loss – Companies and events don’t want to invest in states that legalize discrimination. That means lost jobs and money for Georgia.

What Can We Do?

We’ve fought these battles before, and we’ve won. But we can’t sit back now.

Call your legislators – Tell them SB 1, SB 30, SB 36, and SB 39 are a hard NO.

Vote like LGBTQ+ rights depend on it—because they do.

Share this post – If we don’t talk about it, they get away with it.
