Getting healthcare in Georgia shouldn’t feel like winning the lottery. But for too many of us, it does. Whether it’s sky-high insurance costs, rural hospitals shutting down, or trying to get an appointment and being told “next available is in six months”, we’re dealing with a broken system.
And instead of fixing it? Some lawmakers are making it worse by blocking Medicaid expansion, cutting coverage, and ignoring the fact that Georgia has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the country. Yeah. It’s bad.
So… What’s Actually Wrong?

Rural hospitals are shutting down – If you live outside a big city, getting to a doctor can mean a long drive and even longer wait times.
No Medicaid expansion = More uninsured people – Georgia’s refusal to expand Medicaid means hundreds of thousands of low-income residents can’t afford care.
Maternal health crisis – Georgia has one of the highest maternal death rates in the U.S., and Black women are hit the hardest due to racial disparities in healthcare.
Mental health? What mental health? – Therapy, addiction treatment, and psychiatric care are barely accessible, especially for those without insurance.
What Can We Do?
There are bills on the table right now that could actually make a difference:
SB 50: PeachCare Plus Act – Would expand Medicaid so more people can actually afford healthcare.
SB 39: Attacking Gender-Affirming Care – This bill would block insurance from covering critical medical care for transgender individuals. If they can take away that coverage, what’s next? Birth control? IVF? Cancer treatments?
Here’s the Bottom Line
If Georgia expanded Medicaid, protected reproductive rights, and invested in mental health, we’d see:
More hospitals staying open.
More moms surviving childbirth.
More people getting the care they need—without going broke.
So why isn’t that happening? Politics. But guess what? We can change that.
How You Can Help
Call your legislators – Tell them to expand Medicaid and stop playing games with our health.
Vote for candidates who believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
Share this post – Because too many people don’t even know how bad the situation is.
